Vince Gilligan Shares He Has a Plan for How Pluribus Will Conclude... For Now.
Vince Gilligan never anticipated that the Apple TV+ show would turn into a massive hit. “The viewers have been incredible,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
Now that Season 1 of the hit series coming to an end—and a second season greenlit and underway—the creative team opened up about the fan response and whether it will influence the narrative path of Pluribus.
About the Tremendous Audience Reaction
One could easily to get swayed by the rampant praise and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. The creator is striving to steer clear of all that.
“The experience is akin to an endless supply of hot fudge sundaes and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not changed by what people are saying.”
“Better to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan adds.
The Big Question: Will the showrunner Have a Plan for the Conclusion of Pluribus?
Given that Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by audience theories, does it imply they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? Essentially yes… with some caveats.
“There are some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “yet we stand ready to discard a decent plan for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”
Alternatively, if all else fails, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to fall back on.
“I constantly suggest that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and the characters are inside it,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Then again, why mess with the classics?
“I'd love for Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus is currently available on the streaming service.
