Ultra-Conservative Former Congressman José Antonio Kast Voted In as Chile Incoming Head of State.
In a decisive final ballot, ultra-conservative figure José Antonio Kast has won the top job in Chile.
A Resounding Triumph
With over 99% of ballots counted, Kast won 58.17% of the vote, beating leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.
This signifies Kast's third presidency, having previously been defeated by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.
Platform Focused On Law and Order and Immigration
Recognized for his unwavering socially conservative views and admiration for the era of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was largely centered on promises to address growing insecurity and radically restrict migration.
He consistently cited immigrants, especially the approximately 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. During the campaign, he issued an ultimatum for them to exit before the inauguration or face deportation.
His proposals envisioned Trump-inspired measures such as constructing camps, high walls, security fences, and strengthening the army presence on the northernmost border.
Amid a Regional Shift
Many commentators view Kast's success as part of a larger right-wing wave in South America, coming after recent electoral wins in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Yet, other experts also view it as a continuation of the established alternation of power between left-wing and right governments since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.
Governing Lacking a Solid Mandate
Despite his clear popular vote win, Kast will not command an clear majority in the legislature, not in the Chamber of Deputies or the Senate, even if all right-leaning parties are combined together.
This legislative situation may challenge his agenda, such as a pledge to cut public spending by a significant sum within 18 months—a proposal for which he has yet to detailed a clear explanation.
"There are many aspects about how a Kast government will look like that are uncertain because he has not said how he will do them," said a political analyst.
The professor continued, "On fiscal matters, it is almost certain we will see spending cuts common for the right-wing. However the area with much less ambiguity is on law and order, because that has been his flagship issue during the campaign."
