The Reason Real Madrid Possess 'Total Faith' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch

The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven games for the Spanish giants, including five starts.

When an teenage makes club history in a pivotal European tie against Manchester City, it naturally attracts acclaim and the spotlight.

During his maiden start in the competition - and fifth game for the club - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the fifteen-time Champions League winners secured a 3-0 last-16 first-leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted the Madrid side defeat the English Premier League side in Tuesday's return to confirm a quarter-final berth.

Aged 18 years old, Pitarch became the team's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.

A Meteoric Rise From La Fabrica

The midfielder is the most recent to come through from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most promising protegees.

He joined Real from CD Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe academies, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a positive impact.

Pitarch worked his way up to the B team and it was in a pre-season game in which they faced the senior squad, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who took over from Xabi Alonso in January.

Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," noting he excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, personality and determination he brought to the team.

'His Best Attribute Is His Character'

In the summer of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso called up Pitarch to practice with the senior squad and gave him minutes in the warm-up matches.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the defining moment in his development as he came on as a late substitute in both ties against Benfica that set up the meeting with Manchester City.

"I have dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the first day I began playing football, each day you go to train and every day you play a match," stated the player after his debut.

"I have just achieved my ambition with the best team in the planet and in the best competition."

Handed a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opening.

Pitarch has taken it with performances that have belied his youth and inexperience.

"He is a very quick player, and you can see his capabilities," said the coach. "He's extremely energetic, with great endurance, work-rate and movement."

Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his manager.

"His standout trait is his character," continued Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I realize people are astonished to see him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had complete trust in him to perform what he usually does.

"Thiago will continue to get chances with the main squad. It is delightful to coach a player like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and was raised deeply involved in Spanish football, progressing through local academies before joining Real Madrid's renowned La Fabrica system.

He possesses both Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, offering him the option to play for both nations at the highest level.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent multiple nations at youth level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only binding once they appear in a official full international.

He has featured for the Spanish national team at underage levels, representing both the under-19 and under-20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain reached the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to any full national side, who are watching his progress with interest.

Speaking recently, the player confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision so far. Things are positive with Spain, but I will reach a conclusion soon."

This scenario echoes that of other dual nationality players such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. Whereas teenage Yamal opted for La Roja, Diaz opted to play for the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Real side and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.

He played 74 minutes in the 2-1 victory at the Etihad, which completed a five-one overall triumph and a last-eight tie with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by another academy player in Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the club chase future success.

After his notable contributions so far on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is expected to play a key role in that.

"The manager treats me the identical way. We handle it very naturally. I attempt not to overanalyze it excessively - I must deserve my playing time on the pitch," he commented following the win at Etihad Stadium.
