The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Critical Role Song
This latest animated series, the newest animated series by the beloved role-playing group, revealed an exciting opening credits. It features the beloved cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals kicking ass and making their mark, while teasing at several agonizing backstories for key figures including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
Overall, the intro looks stunning. However, I felt that something was missing in the song choice.
This sequence uses "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar composition created by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the official score of that title, the second one put out by the production company's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I believe that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.
But for me, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it improved further when cast member the performer wrote words to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and fun. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of adventurous fun.
The show's intro with "the new song" doesn't strike the same chords in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is a little off.
Of course, Critical Role has stated that the animated show will have some surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening appears as one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be released on the streaming service from November 19. If you can't wait before that, or wish to prepare to get to know the characters of the second series, the actual play are available on Spotify and the video site.
