When I enter the space, Lamine Camara grabs a soccer ball he clings to throughout the conversation. This serves as a simple symbol for a dream he has never let slip. “My sole focus was the beautiful game; my mind was set on nothing else,” states this AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His resolve and natural ability convinced teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the most difficult person to convince didn't come from a sporting director or coach, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me to play football but it’s because he had never watched me,” says Camara.

Surmounting Initial Obstacles

Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” he received his father’s blessing to chase his career in the game. Another challenge was his modest frame, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a deal.

Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following he earned the MVP in a regional tournament, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “I was taken straight to the academy. They prevented me from returning to Casamance,” he recalled.

An Unforgettable Season and European Arrival

This move set him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, though tired, he played in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his nation to the title and being named best player.

A month later, he was unveiled as Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” states the 21-year-old. He resides by himself in Europe, a situation his family encourage to keep him focused.

Inspiration and Playing Style

Off-field noise are not really a concern for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and exceptional playing qualities. Additionally, he's a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and accuracy from set pieces are notable assets. He admits a need to temper his competitive fire, having been shown red early in his tenures at each French club. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he quips.

Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Ambitions

At Monaco, he cherishes the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” he said.

Right now, his focus is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. If you beat England on their soil…,” he says, pointing to a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.

Regarding a transfer to the Premier League, he remains focused on Monaco for now. “I feel really comfortable here,” he insists. However, he's frequently teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about targeting the main Africa Player of the Year in the future.

“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country… it gives you confidence.”

Moving forward, Lamine Camara combines humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions as he aims to lead Senegal to continental glory and forge his own legendary path in the game.
