Red Cross Accompanies Hamas in Search for Bodies of Israeli Hostages in Gaza

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) stated that its personnel joined members of Hamas into zones of Gaza still under Israeli military control to support the search for the bodies of individuals held captive.

Truce Agreements and Hostage Bodies Return

Under the truce negotiated by the United States, which took effect on 10 October, the group is required to hand over the remains of all Israeli hostages as soon as possible. In exchange, the Israeli government has consented to hand over 15 Palestinian bodies for each Israeli.

The organization has to date returned the remains of fifteen of those held captive but zero in the last five days, as a portion of those remains are thought to be in locations past the ceasefire boundary marking the temporary truce line.

Red Cross Role as Neutral Intermediary

“At the request of the parties, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) accompanied a participant in the hostilities as the party searched for the remains of the deceased individuals beyond the IDF-designated ‘yellow line’,” said a spokesperson for the organization.

She continued: “Those involved to the hostilities determined the procedures of the operation and delegated the Red Cross to serve as a impartial mediator. We was had no part in those negotiations.”

The official further clarified: “The ICRC was did not participate in the physical hunt for the bodies nor does it take part in the retrieval of remains.”

US Ultimatum and Local Recovery Operations

Recently, the American leader issued a 48-hour demand to the organization. “They is going to have to start handing over the bodies of the hostages who died, which include American citizens, quickly, or the other countries involved in this great peace will take action,” he wrote on his online channel.

As the 48-hour deadline neared, the group, joined by the Red Cross, teamed up with teams from Egypt, who were authorised by Israeli authorities to search for remains past the boundary marking the withdrawal of troops inside Gaza. An official representative said the delegation would use excavator machines and trucks in the operation.

Authoritative Verification and Press Reports

The news was corroborated by an unnamed Israeli official, who told Hebrew-language media that members of the group had been allowed to enter sections of the region under military authority to search for the remains of captives, alongside Egyptian and Red Cross personnel.

“To achieve this goal, representatives were permitted to pass the designated boundary,” the source was quoted as stating.

Footage published by a regional network appeared to show individuals of a Hamas unit – belonging to the organization’s military wing tasked with holding hostages – accompanying a humanitarian transport in a coastal area close to a southern city, which lies outside Israeli military control.

Difficulties in Locating Hostage Remains

Efforts to locate for the remains of individuals taken captive has turned into one of the most delicate matters in the ceasefire reached between the parties. Yet, the attempt to find the bodies has been challenging from the outset, given the presence of an estimated 60m tonnes of debris across the strip, where, according to health officials, at least ten thousand residents are recorded as missing, buried under the rubble.

Conflicting Claims on Remains Location

The group has stated it lacks information on the precise locations of all the remains, saying it has lost contact with a number of its teams that had been detaining the captives and were allegedly killed during Israeli bombardments.

In contrast, an Israeli government spokesperson claimed that the organization was aware of the whereabouts of the bodies. “Should the group exerted greater effort, they would be able to retrieve the remains of our captives,” the official said.

American Position and Weapons Surrender Discussions

Although the US president has conceded that some of the bodies are difficult to reach, he said that “the rest they can hand over immediately and, for some reason, they are failing to do so.”

“It may have to do with the disarming of the group,” he added.

The US administration has said it has obtained guarantees from the organization that the faction will surrender its arms, though no specific schedule has been established. They remains reluctant to give up its arms without solid guarantees about the fate of its fighters.
