Preparations for Trump-Putin Meeting Postponed Days Following Budapest Negotiations Proposed

Currently exist "no arrangements" for US President Donald Trump to confer with Russian President Vladimir Putin "in the near term", a administration representative has stated.

Recently the US president indicated he and the Kremlin leader would meet in Budapest soon to discuss the Ukraine conflict.

A planning session between US Secretary of State Secretary Rubio and his opposite number Foreign Minister Lavrov was scheduled to occur this week - but the White House said the two had had a "productive" call and that a meeting was no longer "necessary".

The administration declined to provide any more details on the reason the negotiations had been delayed.

Previous Developments

The US president had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit via telephone with the Russian leader, a day before hosting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Some reports indicated his meeting with Zelensky had been a "contentious discussion", with insiders indicating the president had pushed him to relinquish extensive regions of eastern Ukraine as part of a settlement with Moscow.

However, on Monday Trump endorsed a ceasefire proposal endorsed by Kyiv and European leaders to pause the war on the existing battle lines.

"Let it be cut in its current state," he stated.

Russia has consistently objected against freezing the present battle positions.

The Russian government was only interested in "permanent resolution", Lavrov commented on this week, suggesting that freezing the front line would simply constitute a short-term truce.

Negotiating Stances

The "fundamental issues" of the war needed to be addressed, the Russian diplomat said, using Russian diplomatic language for a series of extensive requirements that encompass the recognition of complete Moscow control over the Donbas as well as the disarmament of the country – a impossible condition for Ukraine and its European partners.

The Ukrainian president said conversations concerning the battle positions were the "start of negotiations" but that Moscow was "employing all tactics" to prevent dialogue.

He also said the only topic that could cause Russia to "take notice" was that of the delivery of distance-capable munitions to Ukraine.

Military Considerations

The Russian president's spontaneous discussion with Trump recently preceded reports that the United States was considering delivering extended-range cruise missiles to Ukrainian forces that could possibly hit inside Russia.

The Ukrainian leader stated it was the missile discussion that had forced Russia to engage in discussion. The conversation concerning the weapons systems had proven to be a "significant input" in negotiations", he added.
