Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the player will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their recent conversation.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where he is reported as critical but stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “However, I can share, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. Once more, that reassures me, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”

New York police shared security footage Monday of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and police mentioned it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.

The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday about halfway between MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was admitted to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a child.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd was inactive during the current season, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.

He joined the Jets as a free agent in March and was expected to be a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on August 2 and had to be helped off.

Boyd continued to be present all season long while healing from his surgery.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “Certainly, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of Texas University in 2019. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
