England to Launch Euro 2028 Quest at the Etihad Stadium
England’s men’s team will initiate their 2028 European Championship journey at the Manchester City’s stadium, assuming they secure the expected passage for a championship staged throughout the majority of the UK and the Irish Republic.
City’s stadium has not hosted an Three Lions fixture since the spring of 2016, when the visitors were overcome 2-1 in a exhibition match, but is expected to host the national team for their opening fixture on a Saturday in June 2028.
The team are scheduled to play their last two group stage games at the national stadium, but, should they win their group, their knockout stage opener would be held at the Newcastle stadium. Securing the runner-up spot would mean beginning the playoffs at Everton’s ground.
Tournament Launch and Protest
The event was inaugurated at an gathering in a London landmark on Wednesday night. High-ranking officials from European football’s governing body and the host football associations were heckled as they arrived the site by around fifty activists, who called for Israel’s national side to be kicked out from global football because of the Gaza crisis.
Placards were displayed with slogans reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while activists shouted: “Kick Israel out.”
Championship Timeline
The first match of the tournament will be held at the Cardiff’s stadium in Cardiff, on June 9, 2028, a fixture that will involve the Welsh team if they make it.
Wembley will host both semi-finals and the championship match, which will be played on a Sunday in July 2028 with a commencement at 5:00 PM.
It is expected that an afternoon start, which will also be adopted for European club finals from next season, will appeal to households and help engage a more diverse set of viewers.
Host Nations
The Ireland are due to play their initial fixture at the Dublin Arena and the Tartan Army would do the same at Hampden Park.
The national sides of all four hosts will enter the preliminary stage; two reserved places will be reserved for any that do not reach the finals through the standard process.
Venues and Playoffs
The Birmingham venue and Spurs’ ground finalize the event’s nine venues. All will hold at least one knockout match, with the last eight held at every host’s main arena.
The qualification draw will be conducted in Belfast, which was excluded as a venue city last year when it became clear Casement Park could not be renovated in time, on a date in late 2026.
Official Statement
“The event will be a competition for the fans and a celebration of everything we value about the sport – its passion and ability to bring people together.”
More than three million passes, a record for a UEFA European Championship, are projected to be released to supporters.
