Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Death Penalty

Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated outrage after Donald Trump charged a coalition of Democratic legislators of being "betrayers" and declared they should be taken into custody and punished "by death" following their publication of a disputed video.

The Content That Sparked the Controversy

The video footage, released on earlier this week, features six Democratic elected officials who in the past served in armed forces or defense roles.

"As we did, you all swore an vow to defend and uphold this constitution," the representatives stated in the brief video. "And right now, the threats to our democratic foundation are not only from overseas, but from domestically. Our statutes are explicit, you can decline unlawful commands, you can decline illegal orders, you should decline unlawful commands. No one has to execute directives that contravene the legal system or our constitution."

Donald Trump's Angry Response

The recorded statement seemed to trigger a angry reaction from the former president.

On later in the week, Trump published on Truth Social: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In a separate post, he declared: "This represents really serious, and Dangerous to our Nation. Their comments cannot be allowed to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a subsequent publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a declaration that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Opposition Leaders Answer

Following Trump's statements on Thursday, Democratic leadership published a joint declaration denouncing the statements.

"Violent politics has no role in America," they wrote. "Elected officials who were featured in the video all served our country with great loyalty and excellence. We unequivocally censure Donald Trump's disgusting and risky threats of violence against congressional representatives, and appeal to House Republicans to strongly do the same."

The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in touch with law enforcement "to guarantee the protection of these representatives and their loved ones."

"Donald Trump must right away remove these radical social media posts and retract his dangerous discourse before he gets someone killed," the declaration stated.

Lawmakers' Strong Reaction

The officials who were featured in the video also released a statement.

"We serve as veterans and defense specialists who care for this country and swore an oath to safeguard and uphold the national charter of the United States," they declared. "That oath continues forever, and we aim to keep it. No warning, intimidation, or promotion of aggression will stop us from that sacred duty."

"The most revealing aspect is that the former president deems it subject to penalty by capital punishment for us to repeat the statutes," they stated. "Military personnel should recognize that we have their protection as they fulfill their pledge to the constitution and obligation to adhere to only proper directives. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our responsibility."

They continued: "Every American must unite and denounce the ex-president's calls for our murder and ideological conflict. This is a time for principled stance."

Additional Partisan Responses

The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's comments and shared on social media: "We must be absolutely clear: the President of the United States is calling for the execution of elected officials."

He stated: "This constitutes an outright THREAT. Every Senator, all representatives, all citizens – irrespective of political affiliation – should denounce this immediately and absolutely."

The Conservative official supported Trump's allegation that the Democrats had been involved in "rebellion", describing the video as "extremely improper", adding: "This represents very dangerous, you have prominent officials of the government telling troops to disobey orders, I think that's unprecedented in US history."

The Conservative representative also according to sources informed journalists that in what he reviewed of Trump's posts, Trump was "describing the violation of rebellion" but that "legal experts have to parse the language and determine all that."

Administration Reaction

During a administration briefing on later that day, when asked by a reporter, "Is the president want to kill congressional representatives?", the administration spokesperson replied: "Certainly not."

"Let's be clear about what the president is responding to," the representative declared. "There are sitting members of the American legislature who coordinated to arrange a video message to individuals of the US military, to active duty service members advising them to defy the executive's lawful orders."

She added: "The integrity of our defense system rests on the hierarchy, and if that system is violated, it can result in fatalities, it can cause confusion, and precisely what these elected officials ... are basically encouraging."
