Condemnation Erupts as Former President Trump's Social Media Remarks on Rob Reiner Ignites Widespread Rebuke

Individuals from across the partisan divide and the Hollywood industry are coming together to censure Donald Trump for his statements in the wake of the shocking deaths of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

A Controversial Social Media Statement

After the couple were found dead at their Brentwood residence, Trump posted on his platform to describe the deceased director as "tortured and struggling". The message, he claimed Reiner's demise was "due to the hostility he provoked others through his massive, unyielding, and untreatable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

The post quickly shifted to self-praise, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "unprecedented era of America".

Police Update and Detention

Police have since announced the detention of the couple's adult son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in relation to the case. Reports indicate his bail was set at a significant sum.

A Torrent of Criticism from Celebrities and Politicians

The reaction to Trump's post was immediate and scathing.

“What a appalling and despicable statement,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, also criticized the statements. She pointed to previous rhetoric from Trump about political violence, demanding, "Have you no shame? Is it possible to get any lower?"

The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "This is a disturbed man."

Mirroring this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "What a contemptible piece of garbage."

Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just lost it. Now implying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own murder because they opposed him. Deeply disturbing."

Rebuke from His Own Political Ranks

Some Republican elected officials also voiced dismay.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a family tragedy, not about politics or rivals". Greene also mentioned challenges with addiction and psychological well-being some families face.

Another GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disgraceful" given the nature of the deaths. He openly challenged others in his political party to defend the statements.

Reiner's History and Stance on Trump

Rob Reiner was long a outspoken critic of Donald Trump. During a previous conversation, he argued Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the presidency. He had also cautioned about the risks of autocracy if Trump return to power.

"There is autocracy on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "If we crumble, there’s a danger that democratic systems collapse around the world."

Regardless of his strong criticisms, Reiner had in the past shown "complete revulsion" and condemned political violence unequivocally after the killing of another political figure.

An Ironic Connection: The Art of the Deal

Providing a layer of past irony, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had previously recounted the story of the session, mentioning Trump's demand for "special hairspray" while posing on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
