Cancellieri Demonstrates Brief Sparks of Brilliance in Positive Aspect for Struggling Lazio

The feeling at their home stadium was far from happy during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, an opponent that had conceded ten goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their latest protest in a long-running conflict with club owner Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?

Was Lazio's season coming unstitched, or was there ever any cohesion keeping it intact in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, but then he publicly stated that the club had failed to disclose a registration embargo they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Speculation that he might quit were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Biancocelesti became as messy during matches as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the rest of their opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, it has been hard to determine if they're getting better or collapsing.

Cancellieri's Surprising Return

A single player kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio this season. He spent the previous campaign on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were advocating for him to remain there for another season. The registration embargo necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team without replacements.

Cancellieri arrived in the first place when Sarri was last in charge, then a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those as a substitute. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended after that campaign, subsequently claimed Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."

Finding His True Position

Perhaps the manager was still trying to determine the exact type of the player's talent. Originally described as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri nevertheless spent much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile as center forward. Across 63 games on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
